Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is an upright, domed headed, variety with the best purple leaf colour. Holds colour well. The red leaves turn bright crimson and blood-red in autumn. Each leaf bears 5-7 deeply cut lobes. When the leaves fall, the blackish-red bark produces winter interest.

Bloodgood benefits from being positioned in a sheltered location. Will tolerate full sun or partial shade, but needs protection from cold winds. The best leaf colour will be produced if grown in partial shade.

Will reach 5m x 4m in 20 years. A vigorous grower.

Garden Care:

Should be grown in moist but well-drained soil. Leaf colour is best in partial shade but the full sun can be tolerated.

Like all Maples, this one is very easy to maintain. It doesn't require any pruning routine. Remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time to prune is the late autumn or winter when the plant is fully dormant.

In spring you may add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser or organic matter around the base of the plant.
