Castanea sativa produces catkins in summer which turn into edible chestnuts in autumn. The chestnuts arrive in spiny, yellow/green jackets and are popular for roasting and also favoured by wildlife. Foliage is deeply serrated, large and dark green turning golden bronze before falling. This large ornamental tree, often called Sweet Chestnut or European Chestnut, is rounded in form with twisted, ribbed, retiform bark with age.

The wood of Castanea sativa is high in tannin, making it virtually rot proof, so the tree is often used for coppicing which it responds well to. It can be grown in most conditions but prefers a lighter soil and will not tolerate heavy lime in a soil. This magnificent Chestnut tree will grow to 10 x 6 meters in 20 years. It is often used in park lands or avenues and is worthy of a space in the larger garden.
